Community Art First!
Ann Kornuta along with fellow FASM artist Sandra Spagnuolo are near compleation of the ongoing community art project covering the Milton Town Hall.
This exciting art project brings a light to some of the important moments in Milton's local history, all 150 years of it.It just hasn't been Ann and Sandra painting- other local FASM artists, children, citizens and even the town staff themselfs have all had a chance to claim their bit of fame.
In just a few weeks the project will be compleated... stay posted for the latest news!
Milton
celebrated its 150th birthday this past June 9 2007 by closing
off the downtown Main Street district to play host to artisans,
musicians, vendors and fine dining. Ann Kornuta along with her
partner in art crimes Sarah Joncas were there in full force to
help celebrate!
Though the party officially started
at 2pm, Ann Kornuta and Sarah Joncas were already on the street
by 8am in the morning that day painting during the farmers
market. Together, both prolific artists painted for a full 10
hours on the street outside the Dorland-Haight Gallery as people
past by.
To add a little "old-school" flavor to the celebration, Ann
started off the festival at 2pm with a little flare by getting
in touch with her own Graff roots spray painting a massive
tractor for the crowd. "The best thing about gaff is the
reaction you get," Kornuta said. "At one point I had a huge
group of kids behind me yelling 'THAT'S SO COOL' and even Mayor
Gord Krantz came by to comment on my spray painting joking that
he knows my work well enough to recognize it if I ever decided
to be bad and paint on the buildings themselves. I told him I was a good artist- I would never harm any of my
'beloved subjects'."
The graff painting itself is not for sale as it has been a
project one year in the wait for the offices at the Halton
Compass where Ann works as a journalist and photographer.
The day itself was a huge success for Milton's favorite artists
as two pieces of her new collection, Fields Meet the Green and
Our Barber were privately sold along with the creation of a new
Market scene and a new small rendition of Milton's Town Hall in
celebration of it's birthday.
Ann was also on the local TV station Cogeco 14 as part of a
feature spotlight on local artists for the 150th birthday
celebration.
You can still catch Ann painting live every Saturday morning at
the Milton Farmers Market 8am to 12pm outside the Dorland-Haight
Gallery, though she plans to leave the spray paint at home for
now.
Sandra Spagnuolo and Ann Kornuta team up to take over Milton's Town Hall.
Ann Kornuta and Sandra Spagnuolo of FASM are your
artists chosen to direct Milton's biggest community art project since... well,
ever!
With the expansion construction of Milton's Town
Hall already underway, these two artists are in charge of getting the community
involved in decorating the 40 some wooden panels surrounding the site.
Directing schools, active community groups and town staff, Ann and Sandra have
the task of beautifying one of Milton's famous landmarks. Photo's and media will
follow as the due date of July 1st rolls around.
Ann Kornuta along with fellow artists Sarah Joncas,
Tom Dietrich and introducing fibre artist Kathy Tyers will be just some of the
featured artists at this the exciting celebration as Milton turns 150 years old! Celebrating Milton’s 150th Anniversary in
2007 is a significant milestone for the Town. Milton has evolved into a
thriving blend of old and new, urban and rural, nestled within the
natural landscape of the Niagara Escarpment. Residents and visitors are
encouraged to participate in the special festivities taking place
throughout the year and to get involved by planning their own events.
“150 Years, Celebrating Milton’s Roots” was
the contest-winning slogan, created by local resident Rose Brooks. The
theme is “Celebrating our Roots.” Milly the Millstone is the official
mascot of the 150th anniversary, designed by local resident Michelle
Job. You can invite Milly to attend your special event! Milly represents
the millstone, which was the centre of the gristmill, built in 1822 by
Jasper Martin one of Milton’s first settlers. The gristmill, now the
site of Martindale Gardens, and the pond that provided the water for its
operation, was the centre of the settlement in Milton through the 19th
and much of the 20th century.

featured faces at
the Milton Farmer's Market
A new harvest means a new crop of paintings for
Milton's favorite impressionist artist Ann Kornuta. Until October, Ann will be
painting your world by the Dorland-Haight Gallery on Main Street during the
market- weather permitting.
Already her commission list is growing so make sure you get on the list to have
your very own AnnK painting before it's too late!

Ann Kornuta was one
of the featured artists during the Fine Arts Society of Milton's annual
Studio Tour that took place in September. Over two days AnnK's work was
displayed on the walls of Peter and Miriam Haight's stunning century stone
farm house. It was a huge success with over 30 other local artists who
opened their studio doors.

In their second
Milton show, artists Ann Kornuta and Sarah Joncas literally turned heads with
BROADCASTING at the Dorland Haight Gallery on Main Street. The gala opening
night attracted faces from the local media as well as art fans from across
Southern Ontario. The giant window display depicting AnnK's high school TV
set (ol' Yeller named for the only station it could get, CBC news feed)
managed to turn a few heads with its inflatable dollies- a bizarre first for
Main Street.
It was a stunning success with over 50 paintings sold between AnnK and Sarah in the three week run. All that can be said now is "STAY TUNED" for what hijinks these two artists have to offer in the months to come. More Photos click here.
The Digital Inkz Crew took to the streets during this years second annual
Milton Arts Festival on the Main Street. Featuring the digital works of Greg Akienhead and Luke Markle, Milton got its first taste of digital artwork in analog print (snicker). For more photos of the day events, follow this link.
With the arrival of spring the Milton Farmers Market will absorb the
Main Street in the growing community and once again AnnK will be
there with paint brushes in hand.

The small town girl with big city dreams did it again!
On February 26th at Milton's Hugh Foster Hall the 2006 Milton Heritage
Awards took place presenting awards to citizens in the community who stood
out with their contributions towards preserving history and heritage.
Nominated for her collection "The Conquest of Main Street" paintings, AnnK
was the winner of a Visual Arts award presented by MP Garth Turner.
***A Few Personal Words From AnnK on the Heritage
Awards****
Again, thank you to everyone who came and supported me in the afternoon. As
I reflect on winning, I must say I was very nervous sitting up at the front with
Leslie Fitch from the Library and occasionally I kept turning around to see if I
could catch a glimpse of Sarah and Luke a few rows behind me. Garth made a very
lovely speech where he did note about the website and the work between Inkz and
myself, but forgot to mention Luke! I would like to take this moment to thank
Luke so much for all of his hard work and for being such a good friend of mine.
The Award itself is "TOO MUCH ROCK FOR ONE HAND" (if you know it, throw it
up!) and is actually a piece of stone from the old Milton Bruce Street School
that was built over a hundred years ago and was demolished in 1970. It weighs in
at 20 pounds of Kickin' Frickin' Escarpment stone and has a nice scrawled
plaque. I have never won anything like this before and its an honour to receive
this.
I could not have made it here without all of you! Thank you for your support
and please keep rooting for me in 2006 and towards the future!
That's right, AnnK has (finally) joined up with the local artisans
by becoming one of the newest members of FASM. Look out for this
years Studio Tour taking place in the fall where AnnK will invite
you into her magical world of art mayhem.
AnnK was nominated for the 2006 Milton Heritage Awards in the field
of visual arts for her collection of Main Street paintings, “The
Conquest of Main Street”. The awards take place this February 26th
at Hugh Foster Hall in Milton, 2 pm to 5 pm. .The awards highlight the achievements of Milton citizens
for their contributions in fields of historical significance. AnnK’s collection
was featured in October of 2005 in the SAR~ANN WRAP Show at the Dorland Haight
Gallery on Main Street, Milton with fellow artist and Digital Inkz member Sarah
Joncas.

A big THANK YOU to everyone who came out the evening of October 27th to
the
Dorland
Haight Gallery on
Main Street
for
Sarah and AnnK's first show. It was a huge success selling over 32
paintings in the duration of the show.
The show was not without it's share of controversy. The full page
newspaper ad taken out two weeks before the show came under attack when
several readers wrote into the editor (Stephen Baker) and complained in
the "poor taste" of the advertisement, which featured Sarah's painting Disarmed. As they
say in the art and media world, there is NO SUCH THING AS BAD PRESS.
Word of mouth spread like wild fire from the efforts of Clem Scholtz,
Director of the Deidre and Friends Foundation on the Rotary Club's
Bingo show on Cogeco, repeated media attention from the regional
newspaper The Halton Compass with a delightful story written by reporter
Donna Danielli, Harvey and Heather Shoemaker from Milton Concert Presentations,
and from every storefront on Main Street in Milton who showed their
support by hanging a flyer in their windows. Special thank you to Father
Mark Curtis, better known as Canada's Singing Priest, for his blessings and for
encouraging efforts for the show, Heidi Nowak of the Harrop Gallery,
Steve Bonin from Harris Stationary, and especially Peter, Miriam and Jan
of the
Dorland
Haight Gallery for whom we couldn't have
done the show without.
The show was not without it's charm stopping traffic on the Main Street
with its shocking window display,
(which I might add we crafted last minute since our blow up dolls did
not arrive in time- don't ask) depicting hand cut paper dolls and saran
wrapped dollies. It was most pleasing to see people walk past the window
and do triple takes at the display.
Further interest was created when local TV affiliates COGECO made a 15
minute news broadcast of the show during their What's On Extra. The
program was repeated for the entire week and it made me a believer in
local television after I received phone calls about the broadcast.
I know Sarah and I would like to personally thank our families, friends,
co-workers and teachers who came out that night. There is too many of
you who came and not enough room for all of you, but you know who you
are. You can check out the online gallery and download all the photos of
the night for your scrapbooks and collections here.
SO WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD for the Sultan of Sweet and
the Urban Turban? If
anyone was to agree it would be one word: TROUBLE. Very quickly, and in
buzz phrases, lets shout it! Sarah and AnnK are in the works of a new
spring show with new exciting pieces. Sarah's website should be up
shortly on Digital
Inkz
. AnnK is in the planning stages for a
one-on-one painting course offered through the
Milton
's Adult Learning Classes. Sarah
will continue to work downtown
Toronto
at OCAD finishing off her scholarship. Greg (AKA
Inkz
) will continue to eat bacon and redeem himself as
Super Smash Brothers Melee master (why I included that? because I have
that power).
Keep your eye's peeled for all of the exciting art projects and
conquests of Sarah and AnnK around Halton and
Toronto
as they paint the whole town red, blue, yellow, and so forth.
